Question by just wondering: Do highway patrol carry credit card machines in their cruisers?
Do Highway patrol carry credit card machines in their cruisers? I was pulled over for speeding about 9 years ago in Ohio, and since i was using an international drivers license at the time, the officer told me to pay the tickets on the spot or else, i was going to have to go to jail. And then, when i told him that i had no cash, he said i can pay with my credit card and pulled a credit card reader out of his cruiser.
My friends think that i was scammed but i’m very sure that i wasn’t. Can anybody help me prove this?
UPDATE: to answer an earlier question and to make this question clearer…I was using an INTERNATIONAL DRIVERS PERMIT, and i was pulled over in OHIO, i was a student in Pennsylvania, University of Pittsburgh to be exact, and I’m asking this question now because it just came out in a conversation in my office and my friends at work don’t think this is possible….I tried contacting Ohio Highway Patrol but nobody replied my questions.

I don’t think so..you should never have to pay a ticket on the spot.

If you were going to go to jail they would have taken you to jail.

My boss always has me doing miscellaneous odd jobs while I’m at work in his store, and today one of his assignments to me is to find out (even though I am about 75% incompetent with computers and technology of all sorts) if he could cancel his LAN line for one of his businesses, but use a cell phone that he’s already paying for every month to run the credit card machine. Someone I know suggested that he’d have to buy a $ 5-600 machine to work with the cell phone, and I know the clerk @ that business can always call one of his other businesses and run the card transactions through one of his viable credit card machines. But if someone knows ANYTHING credible about this, I would really love some information, cuz I’m really in the weeds here! Thanks!
ok, “land” line then, goes to show how technology retarded I am
excuse me, “technologically challenged” i believe is the PC term, before ppl start flagging this question.
if my boss disconnected his “land line” we would have no internet.

it’s not a LAN line, it’s a “Land Line”. LAN is completely different. As to is it possible to use cell, I don’t think so. he would need some way of connecting his cell to the credit card machine. If he has net access, it’s possible to get machines that do this through the net instead of over dialup.

I mainly depend on my bank debit card, but between paychecks, if need be, I use the credit card. It’s an AmEx credit card and it was working perfectly fine, even yesterday. But at some point… well, when I went to to eat somewhere, the the credit card machine would not read the card. The guy punched the number in and all was fine. Then, later, at Wal-Mart, same thing happened. It kept coming up, Card Read Error. I tried one more time at a gas station, with the same result. The number goes in, but I guess something is wrong with the strip… what did I do to mess that up? It had been in the same pocket as my cell phone… could that have caused a problem somehow? Although, I’ve had the two in the same pocket, before.

@Reena: Will the numbers still work if they are keyed into the card machine? Or will the card be perpetually rejected, simply because the magnetic strip doesn’t work? I’m just wondering for the “meanwhile” while I wait on a new card.

if its gotten close to a magnet it will de-scramble the magnetic strip and render it useless, just got back to your bank and they should be able to re-code it

Depends on the credit card and the machine. Strictly speaking I don’t think you can use a credit card in an ATM.

There are things called ABMs (Automated Banking Machines) now, which allow withdrawals from credit cards (I see them in casinos).

I am in the process of buying an existing retail store. The current owner is trying to get me to buy the current credit card machine. I was under the assumption that when you signed up with a credit card acceptance company, they provided the machine at no charge… am I right? She is trying to get me to pay $ 400 for this credit card swiper.

Please no answers like “you don’t know anything about business if you are asking such a stupid question, why are you buying one”…. this is just a simple question that is a small part of the grand scheme of buying this business..

When at a store, how does person’s credit card purchase finally end up on the bank statement?
Ok, dumb example: I went to a restaurant today. I paid for the food with my credit card. The waitress took my card, swiped it through a credit card swiper (I guess connected via a satellite link?). After about 30 seconds, the machine printed out my receipt to sign, etc, in addition to my own receipt copy. So, what did the hand held machine do in order to verify my card, in the first place? How did this hand held credit card machine or which the waitress had…retrieve MY credit card information, as in verifying my credit worthiness. My point: how can everything be captured so damned fast, from the waitress mahcine, through the satellite, back to the waitress, to the restaurants credit and the on to my bank? Almost seems so impossible, happening so fast? Anyone with the gift of pure logic?

It’s usually not done via satellite, but just plain land line phone connections. Sometimes if you listen, you can actually hear the modem noise making the connection, just like in the ancient days of the Internet when we all had dial-up.

It works fast just like everything works fast these days, via computers. When you use an ATM, it works fast, right? The credit card check is pretty much the same thing. The signal connects with your bank (or credit card company) and verifies that you do have an active account with them and that there’s enough credit in your account to cover the payment. Then the amount of the purchase gets subtracted from your available balance.

Really. It’s not rocket science, it’s just telephones and computers. Been that way for 30-something years.

I recently went to an outdoor wine sale and stocked up on a lage amount of wine. My total came to almost 900 dollars. I was pretty shocked when I got to the check-out and they just use a manual paper imprint machine to copy my debit card numbers for the charge.
Do many business still do this?
It seems so silly. My business has a credit card machine and we pay .02% fee. The fee is so minor that it makes sense to just have that instead of the manual machine.
It seems like the risk is just too high, but maybe I just dont know about them…
i wasn’t saying it was risky to me, it seems risky to business owners as they dont have a way to authorize the card…
