Generally a debit would be ran to void a credit and a credit would be ran to void a debit.Once this is done, you can them proceed with the transaction as you normally would.
For accounting purposes, to void a single transaction would not be recommended.

On our credit card machine, we would toggle through the transactions, find your’s (since all complete credit card numbers display). We would then touch the screen, and press the “VOID” button. Merchant services will process the void immediately, however, your banking/credit card establishment may not release the funds for 24 to 48 hours (known as a Merchant Hold). Also, voided transactions at an establishment may need supervisor/manager approval, as employees may void transactions and pocket the money. I hope this helps.
