Question by revenantxheart: Credit Card Imprints are illegal?
I work at a hotel in Arkansas and I just had a guest from Nevada yell at me telling me that credit card imprints are now illegal. I don’t understand why american express would issue a credit card machine if they were illegal and if they were just recently made illegal why they wouldn’t call/mail all of the people they issued them to. He said that we can keep doing it until someone sues us I’m assuming he means himself since I imprinted it anyway it sounded to me like something was fishy since we have government and military people stay with us all the time and haven’t said a word, he told me it was due to the new privacy acts or something like that but i couldn’t find anything on it. It is a legitimate credit card imprinting machiene issued by american express.
Wow thanks alot! I thought it might be something like that, I know that we put them on reg. cards in case our system and back up both go down, and also to make sure the number in the computer and the number on the reg card match since people like to switch c.c. at check in and the computer doesn’t always save the second card so the wrong card could get charged. I feel a whole lot better now haha I just didn’t want my manager and what not to get in trouble. I’ve only been doing front desk for about 7 months since my hotel opened like i said we have lawyers and high ranking govt. officals come through all the time so i assumed that they would have told me by now.Best answer:

they are not illegal.
if the guest does not want to submit an imprint, consult ur manager, and ask his advice.I work as a hotel manager, and I will kindly direct the guest to another hotel if he doesn’t want to submit an imprint.
the reason for this: yes, it would suck to lose his business, but it would suck more to have his business, and not be paid for your services.
example:
He stays at your hotel, with no imprint of his credit card. the total for his stay is $ 400.
He then reports to his credit card company, after seeing the bill on his statement, that it was not him who stayed there, and his stay was unauthorized. the credit card company then contacts the hotel, and asks for all paperwork regarding the stay, including signed registration card, signed credit card reciept if available, as well as the imprint of the card.
fail to prouce ANY one of these documents and there’s a good chance the credit card company will honor his accusation that you let someone else use his credit card, and take the money back from you, give it back to him.
short answer: if he doesn’t want an imprint made, politely refuse him service, and direct him to a nearby hotel, OR: if you have an atm on the premises, or nearby, direct him to the atm and have him withdraw sufficient cash for the room, plus any security deposit u assess to hotel guests.

Question by mack k: Will my credit card still be charged?
I recently made a purchase at a department store, the amount was over $ 200.00. I swiped my american express card in the machine and pressed credit and pressed ok when the amount came up, the clerk then gave me the slip to sign. When I got home I realized that the store clerk put not only my copy of the charge slip in the bag but the store copy as well. Will this charge still show up on my amex?Best answer:
Answer by dancinghawk_wolf
It’ll still show up on your Amex (if you’re not sure, call the number on the back of your card for the latest charges, or talk to customer service) but someone at the department store may be eventually tearing their hair out because something doesn’t balance. Drop off the store copy of the charge slip when you get a chance. What do you think? Answer below!

Question by Lilly: Using debit/credit card at MTA Metro Card Machines?
How do you use your debit or credit card when you’re buying a metro card at a machine? It doesn’t look like there’s any place to put in your pin number. Do you enter it on the touch screen?Best answer:
Answer by hotmami331
Ok so when you slide your credit card in the machine, just below is a keypad. The keypad is located directly next to where you would slide your card. You would need to enter your pin # and zip code (if applicable).Know better? Leave your own answer in the comments!

Each credit card has a magnetic strip and the machine reads the strip in binary code (computer language) and reads the details of the card and prepares it to be sent to the credit card network where you are either accepted or declined. What do you think? Answer below!

Question by Bryan: Credit Card Number lawsuit?
I need some legal advice because this kinda woke me up. I ate at a restaurant tonight and paid with my visa check card, the guy gave me my reciept from the credit card machine, and instead of giving me the customer copy he gave me the merchant copy. I looked, and my entire string of my credit card number was on that copy with the exp date. My thought was if they have an employee planning to go nuts… they can take my credit card and go shopping. Do I have grounds to file a lawsuit here?Best answer:
Answer by chrisatmudd
Check with an attorney, but probably not. What would you sue for? The guy hasn’t done anything wrong with it yet. What do you think? Answer below!

I think that’s almost like asking what life would be like if no one invented a car or television. To me it seems inevitable that someone would have come up with the idea. Particularly since similar ideas already existed. Farmers bought supplies at the company store. When the harvest came in they paid back the store. It was only a matter of time before people agreed to contract out that risk of non-payment.Give your answer to this question below!
