Some stores have a simple credit card terminal. Even though the terminal provides the authorization for the transaction, the store must still run a printed receipt through the mechanical roller so that you can sign for the transaction. It gives you an actual receipt for what you signed, and it also gives the merchant physical proof that you did authorize the transaction.
Other stores have a more complex, expensive terminal/printer which does it all in one operation. And your large stores now have credit card terminals tied in with their own cash drawer/computers that operate on the same principle.
